What you missed at SAP TechEd Barcelona

22nd November 2017 Written By Sophie Dell

For the third consecutive year; SAP TechEd Barcelona 2017 was held at the Fira, Barcelona. As usual, the event kicked off with a keynote speech from SAP's Chief Technical Officer, Björn Goerke, over the last few years the event has been Sci-Fi themed, and this year was no exception as Björn’s speech was centred on the bridge of the Star Ship Enterprise, with the title SAP Intelligence Enterprise.

The speech centred on SAP's Cloud Platform and the utilisation of Cloud Foundry, the Cloud Native Computer Foundation and its expanded provision of services including the SAP Leonardo suite of services. SAP Data Hub was SAP’s new announcement as data sharing, pipelining and governance of all data in the connected landscape. ABAP hasn’t been forgotten and has also been moved to the SAP Cloud Platform with ABAP as a Service. Finally, there was also mention of SAP’s partnership with Google, including the provisioning of SAP Cloud Platform on the Google's Cloud Platform, which can now also host HANA Instances of up to 1.4Tb. Included in the announcements was a collaboration creating the Data Custodian Partnership allowing advanced security and compliance of data in the Cloud.

After the keynote speech, it was back to Hall 8, where the show floor, lectures and hands-on rooms were located. The show floor included a wide selection of SAP Partners including stands from the three leading Hyperscale Cloud providers, plus some smaller lesser known cloud providers such as Virtustream, who also provided sponsorship of the SAP TechEd laptop bag which was received by every participant. The show floor also included SAP Experts and Solutions Centres, which included all you needed to know about SAP Leonardo, there were also hands-on sessions, demos and even a Virtual Reality simulation. There was also plenty to keep the developers happy in the Developers Garage, including SAP CodeJam, Code Reviews and hands-on sessions on iOS development and sessions on the SAP Cloud Platform. Finally, there were network discussions where various topics lead to Q&A sessions in an intimate environment of up to 30 people.

If the show floor wasn’t enough for you then the 16 Lecture rooms and 16 hands-on rooms were running constantly from 8.30 am through to 19:00 pm to keep you occupied.

As always, TechEd was educational, inspirational and insightful. One thing to note, if you're planning to attend 2018’s Barcelona TechEd, it's moving a month earlier to 16th - 18th October to keep more in line with the Las Vegas TechEd which is 1st - 5th October 2018.

Live longer and prosper - looking forward to next year.
